By generating a sense of security and confidence to foreign trade, travel and living in
foreign lands, Consuls have grown in importance until today. Now we can found Consuls in
almost all major cities of the world, not only in capitals.
Consuls are generally classified according to ranks and duties into general consuls,
consuls, vice consuls and consular agents. A basic difference exists between career Consuls
and non-career Consuls (honorary). Other differences are about remuneration, immunities and
contract of service.
Turin, as the first capital of Italy, recieved foreign embassies and legations from 1861 to
1864. Since the birth of the italian kingdom, all the countries concerned to maintain
commercial relations with Italy, have sent their Consuls in the City.
This book describes the mission carried out by the Consuls for the represented countries and
citizens and also reconstructs the full list of the Consular corp operating in Turin from
1861 till today.
